Practically speaking a secular humanist lives in much the same way philisophically, IE religion doesnt really matter day to day. Maybe Apatheism is just a subset of secular humanism just as secular humanists can be athiest or agnostic? I dont know.
It would seem the goal/spirit of the idealogy is similar:
Stick to practical human solutions to problems and treat supernatural stuff with either complete indifference or a high degree of skeptisism.

Re: How is Apatheism different from secular humanism?
Fri, May 6, 2005 - 1:40 PMI just heard the term Apatheism recently. I also consider myself to be a secular humanist. I like the idea of a word that says to belivers "I don't care"
Captain, in you last paragraph is see a possible new term 'practical humanism'

Fri, May 6, 2005 - 1:47 PMHey Storm,
The one thought this brings to my mind is the great number of secular humanists who DO care about religion. Many people are intolerant of religion similarly to religious people that are intolerant. Combatting intolerance with other intolerances won't advance us.
Personally, I couldn't care less what a person believes. I care how they effect the universe. -

They may be intolerant or care about religion and be a secular humanist, but it is a tenant of secular humanism, that is their own particular cross to bear I think.
But I think your right to further distance yourself from such intolerant people you could further subcategorize yourself as Apatheist. While still being all those other titles as well for that matter. Seems to be where I fall sorta. I generally dont care about peoples religion until they bring it up to me. Of course sometimes I am spouting off my views about the bible being full of shit so its hard to avoid talking about it or being truly indifferent to it in our culture. But I truly dont feel my life is incomplete because I dont have the answer to the question of life the universe and everything. I really do believe the question is irrelevant to me personally, its everyone who has the problem with it! (not everyone but you know what i mean) -
