I'm not sure how much there will be to discuss in this tribe since the nature of it is to be non-dogmatic, but if you've got something to say, feel free to say it!
Also if you're wondering how to pronounce Apatheist, you can emphasize the apathy by saying Apa-theist, or you could be a little more obsure by pronouncing it A-pay-theist. That might get you through some conversations with pushy people who insist on labling you with a religion and they might just let it pass. But probably not ;).

Re: Welcome!
Wed, August 20, 2003 - 2:46 PMTo me, religion should be more or less something fun and something not to be taken too seriously. I think a lot of the world's problems come from people taking themselves WAY too seriously. People should just lighten up, have fun and relax. -

Re: Welcome!
Fri, September 12, 2003 - 11:10 PMif we can observe the entire content of our minds, we can start to live without the dependence of our conclusions (whatever they are).
remember, even the term "apatheist" may limit our ability to see what is there.
i also second the emotion of terry! : )
a sense of humour goes a long way. -

Re: Welcome!
Sat, September 13, 2003 - 7:49 AMThe term "apatheist" kind of denotes that you don't give a damn what is there. :D
Not that I'm an apatheist... -

Re: Welcome!
Tue, October 7, 2003 - 9:24 PMI get what you mean here, that the "map is not the territory", but it's still helpful to have a map to navigate and figure out where you're going, or, even more helpful, where you are!!
So as long as we're aware that any label is limiting by nature, it doesn't hurt to subscribe to a definition.
A lot of people may not have been able to really think outside of the labels (religions or anti-religions) that are popular, so having Apatheism out there just gives them something else to think about. Or permission to NOT think about religion, as the case may be. -

Re: Welcome!
Tue, November 25, 2003 - 12:33 AMso is there any difference from "agnostic"? doesn't that also mean "i find religion to be a waste of time"? -
-
Re: Welcome!
Wed, November 26, 2003 - 5:40 PMagnostic generally seems to mean 'i don't know and I don't think we can know -- but I might care if we ever did'
whereas my take on apatheist is 'whether we can know or not, or you think we can, it doesn't matter-- do whatever you think is right, period, and don't worry about knowing or not'...

Re: Welcome!
Thu, November 13, 2003 - 3:49 PMBasically, I'm joining this tribe because I have many times called myself an "apatheist" or "apathist" because I simply don't care if there is a God. -

Re: Welcome!
Fri, November 14, 2003 - 2:43 PMThis is an interesting way to approach the matter, we can't prove it either way so what is the value of spending your time and energy pretending that you KNOW.
The upside is that if you aren't worried about waht happens after you can have more fun focusing on today.
Peace, out. -

Re: Welcome!
Mon, December 1, 2003 - 8:58 AMI could not agree more. If you spend time proving or disproving religion you give credit to something that you couldn't give a rat's ass about. Also you spend less time living in TODAY.
The emotional "logic" of most religions is also annoying.
Hooray for honesty. :-) -

Re: Welcome!
Mon, December 1, 2003 - 11:57 AMI don't think religion is a bad thing as a whole. It's helped to spread good morals (for the most part) and is a wonderful social "hub" for many people. I just don't believe that any of it's true. I don't really call myself an apatheist (i'm agnostic) but the idea is very interesting. -

Re: Welcome!
Tue, December 2, 2003 - 8:50 PMI think religion *is* a bad thing. I like the concept of faith, but that does not seem to be what most religion is about. It more often is about ceding your ability to think for yourself, and pitting human beings against each other. The concept of morals being adopted based on fear of punishment (sinning, hell, damnation) is also amazingly horrible, and self defeating.
If, on the other hand, you have taken some form of faith to give you a basis for coping with life, then hey, that's fine by me. Just don't use it as justification for the judgement of others. Love or hate based upon action, not dogma.
Sorry, don't wanna sound to riled up. I like the gist of the comments here. This is just what comes out when I think of "Religion."
Oh, howdy, I'm jeremy by the way. -

Re: Welcome!
Wed, December 3, 2003 - 12:34 AMhey jeremy,
no need to apologize (at least as far as i'm concerned). while the question of the existence of gods or dieties is a big ol' "whatever" to me I find religion (especially as it is popularly practiced) for the most part a really loathesome human creation for just the reasons you stated. relgion-cult, cult-religion same difference to me. it's about avoiding reality & not thinking for yourself. -
-
Re: Welcome!
Wed, December 3, 2003 - 4:14 PMThe not thinking for yourself part is most bothersome. The nullification of women as thinkers also, is quite bothersome.
Religion gives a lot of people something to do and connect by in a spiritual way, though.
Shame there is so much killing in the name of... and only half of the human race seems to have a voice.
